Public speaking and making presentations - facts of life

Presentations are a fact of life in business these days. Like them or loathe them, everyone has to do them - and most people loathe them. We help. We'll train you to make better presentations - with more impact on your audience and less stress on you.

We believe that it's important to cover not only the presentation skills that you'll get from other training companies like us, but also the important 'soft' skills, such as voice projection, dealing with nerves, posture and so on.

What do we think presentations should be like?

Interesting question!

Certainly they should be informative and entertaining (if they're not, your audience won't care how much good content you've got!)... but that's not the real point.

The real point is that no one should really notice the presentation.

Eh? Well, we believe that the presentation is about giving your audience what they need, in the way they need it. That means that they should be able to concentrate fully on the content - not on you. The presentation is the means, not the end in itself.

whisky glasses as presentation

We sometimes even describe a good presentation as like a whisky glass - it can be beautiful in its own right, but the main point of the glass is to get the content (good whisky!) to your mouth. If it does that in a way that allows you to really, really enjoy the whisky, it's done it's job.

The presentation isn't about you - it's about your message and your audience. Mind you, that doesn't mean you shouldn't work your heart out preparing and delivering! The harder you work the easier it looks... and the better your message will come over to your audience.

Why get presentation skills training from us?

You need to know that whoever does your training you'll get the full range of what you need. We have backgrounds in management, research, training, IT and theatre. That means that whatever you want some help with, you can be sure of our experience. We're so confident, in fact, that we make you a promise: if you don't think a day with us has been worthwhile, just say so and we'll not charge you.

We believe that people can't learn about how to make presentations if they're anxious. That means we work hard to make sure our training is as much fun as it is hard work... and we'll work hard with you, no doubt of that. Training days are very, very intensive - so you get the best value for money from our training time with you. Simple.

What should you do now?

First things first - if you're not sure about your training needs, drop us a line: we promise you no hard sell!

If you're part of an organisation, team or group you'll get better value for money from some in-house training. If it's just you or a couple of you, you should consider applying for one of our public presentation skills training days. (If you can't get to a course, consider a public speaking and presentations book.) Finally, if you've got a specific presentation in mind (for example if you're the MD and it's all down to you!) then your best bet is our one-on-on coaching. Let us know what your situation is and we'll sort out what's best for you. You can contact us here.

Who will get the best from our style of presentations training?

We don't set out to train professional speakers - or would be professional speakers. Instead, we find our style (and our beliefs) work best with people "who have something to say or have to say something": in other words, we work best with people who are passionate about the content of their presentation rather than presenting...

So if you want to become a professional speaker because you want to be a professional speaker, we're probably not the people for you...

... but if you want or need to make presentations or do some public speaking because of what you believe or your circumstances we'll make you this simple promise: if you don't think a day with us has been worthwhile, just say so and we'll not charge you. Simple. (Yes, there's some small print to that but we'll explain everything when you ask about training.)

Customer quote!

Having gone in with a pre-conception that I know all I need to know about Powerpoint and presenting I came away with information I didn’t even know I needed to know!

Free Presentation skills help

TPB, (the Telling People Blog) is our free hints, tips and humour style voice and presentation skills blog is up and running. Here's the current post... It?s a bit too sychophantic for my liking?
but despite that it’s still worth a few minutes of your time, I’d say. It’s a brief look at one of Steve Job’s presentations, talking through why it is that his presentations are just so damned cool. Of course, there’s more to it than this, but it’s a nice starting point.

I left the course with my head full but with a spring in my step. I certainly feel like I am a long way forward to conquering my fear of public speaking.
